UK Trip 2013 - Part 2: Wales 4

On Day 4, we went to the Presili Hills to conduct a fieldwork on hydrology. The place we went to was around 300ish metres above sea level, and it was still early in the morning and it was soooooooo chilly. The feeling of wind blowing across your face at a cold place with a relatively high altitude is not something you would want to experience. D:

And oh. We were decked out in waterproof suits, plus wellington boots. We were totally being the fashion icons of the year. Geographer Vogue, as my non-geography friend pointed out recently.

It was really fun doing hydrology fieldwork at Afon Synfywry (I CAN'T REMEMBER HOW TO SPELL OH MY), as there isn't any "natural" river here in Singapore. Although the river is more like a stream, but it still has upper course, middle and lower courses, with waterfalls and meanders!

There was a lot of walking, which Juliana detested and still hates. We saw some ponies, and our tutor fed them with grasses! As usual, it got super hot in the afternoon. One very important lesson learnt while in Wales is to know layering, in terms of clothing...anyway. At the middle course of the river, not only did we measure the velocity of the river, the depth and width of the river channel, we also studied the organisms in the river! It was really amazing because the river water looked so clear, yet when we scooped out some water and placed them in the white tray, there were tiny organism in the water! One group even caught a small fish haha! The unfortunate thing was that I walked to a relatively deeper part of the river, and I almost fell. Thankfully I didn't, but the water went into my wellies and my socks got wet ew.

As we got back to the FSC, I went around taking more photos as it was our last day at the FSC and Wales. :(

UK Trip 2013 - Part 2: Wales 3

(I'll try to keep this post as short as possible hehehe.)

On the third day, we went to different beaches to investigate the effect of longshore drift and to evaluate the usefulness of the coastal defences. Which means measuring beach profiles, doing both the qualitative and quantitative measurements of the pebbles and rocks. We went to Saundersfoot first to carry out the fieldwork. At lunch time, we had a nice little walk around the town.

Aren't the colourful houses so adorable? Haha. And oh the fact that the red mail box was out of focus (I shot with a small aperture and focused on the houses instead) is really bothering me so muchhh.

My friend and I shared a packet of Nuggets & Chips. They were really yummy and really oily. But hey, who cares about healthy diet or not when you're travelling! And yes, I didn't get Fish & Chips because I'm not really a big fan of fried fish filet haha.

We then continued our journey to the town Amroth, which was hit by a huge storm years ago. (If I remembered correctly on the information sheet) By the time it was in the afternoon and I was literally burning in my long-sleeve shirt.

Pebbles! But they were actually placed here by man to prevent erosion of the beach...not natural at all :(

I got bored.

These wooden structures slows down the erosion brought about by longshore drift :) I was quite excited to see them (weird, I know.) because you'll never find these in Singapore haha.

And that was basically Day 3 in Wales. After returning to the Field Studies Centre, I had my daily dosage of nature photo taking. Here are just some of them :)

Oh and one thing my friends and I do a lot in the late afternoon during our break time is to sit at the benches that are in front of the main house. And we'll just take out whatever food we had and share the food. It was sort of like a picnic, and Juliana and I would dance around (post-concert syndrome). We would also take photos, or simply just laze around and soak in the sun (it was getting chiller in the late afternoon hahaha) I miss those times so terribly :(
